Amati and student model bass clarinets

Hello

A few months ago I asked for advice on student model bass clarinets for my cousin. The conclusion then was the Yamaha 221 was by far best out of all student models.

Now two more possibilities are Leblanc Esprit and Amati. The Esprit also doesn't have two register holes like the student models but the Amati does. I've tried the Amati (ACL 691) but I haven't tried any of the others so I have no idea how it compares with them.

They might have a chance to buy it in the UK (London area) which is less expensive.

Here are some price comparison. For the sake of the forum written in $US. They are high but because of the exchange rate although the $US price is much higher it is still the same for us.

Yamaha 221 here - $2,800 (approx. $2,300 in UK)

Leblanc Esprit here - $4,500 (about the same in UK)

Amati 691 here - I don't know yet. I found that the 692 (low C model) is about $4,250, but it could be a mistake and that might be the cost of the low Eb 691 model. If it is the 692 then I assume the 691 is a few hundred less. I can't find the price in the UK and the Amati website doesn't help.

The questions are, sticking to the student model bass clarinets, is it still true the Yamaha 221 is the best (compariing with models from Jupiter, Selmer/Bundy, Vito), and is the big leap to the intermidate models like Esprit and Amati worth it. If it is, then how do they comapre with each other and with other models (I compare the Amati with the models I'm familiar with which are the pro models from the big companies).

Thank very much!

In that price range, perhaps the new Ridenour Lyrique bass clarinet is worth trying? Could be a very good instrument (better than 'student') from what I hear about the Ridenour Lyrique soprano on this forum.

I'm actually curious myself, that's why I'm suggesting... ;-)

Thanks, but they are not going to order a clarinet from USA (or any country) and especially one they can't try first and doesn't have any reviews. I was hoping to keep this thread on the subject of the clarinets they can choose from, especially comparing the Amati with the others.

Nitai,
"Matan" has two Yamaha bass clarinets that you can try.
How old is the young student? Is he playing the clarinet already or is it another case like Miri?

Hi Sarah

Do you mean Matan the music camp? It is a bit far I think (not sure where it is now I was there many years ago). Do you know what model the Yamaha basses they have, and have you tried them?

He is about 14 and played some clarinet before starting bass clarinet too but now he mainly plays bass clarinet I think. I have no idea who Miri is.

Maybe you have more experience with buying a bass clarinet here and you know about more options I don't?

Thanks.

Hi Nitai,
Sorry for my late answer. I have some ideas- would you like to call me?

Hi Nitai,
Have you heard that Matan is going to be closed. I wonder what are they going to do with all the instruments.
I think that it will be better to borow a basscl and later when he is 17-18 buy a very good instrument.
There are many bassclarinet in Israel that are not beeing used.

Thanks Sarah. They might be able to make a decision now but they said they will ask me again if they need anything else and if they do I will call you.

I'll look into what Matan have too.

Thanks you.
