I have come across a Selmer Centered Tone Bb clarinet. Does anyone know the quality or age of this make?

Selmer Centered Tones are fairly sought after and usually command $350-500 on ebay (if memory serves). It's not going to sound like an R-13 . . . folks that buy them don't want them to sound like R-13's. More of a jazz/big band era instrument with a sound to match. A quality instrument, though.

Yep, sure do....I own one. Used to own two but sold one last May. They were Selmer's top o'the line back in the 50's. I think they ran up to about '59 or so when they brought out the Series 9. Striaght bore (large) instrument (not polycylindrical), unfrased tone holes and a GREAT jazz clarinet! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

If I'm the Don, Fred, "you done good"! Yes the C T is an individual with its own character as J B said, playable in all situations I've been in. I'd suggest a jazz mp and check that its bore and that of the barrel are closely matched, my Benny G does well!! Don

Just curious: Has anyone played both a CT and a Series 9? I'm wondering if they have the same basic sound. I have a Series 9; it's a curiously bright-sounding clarinet, I mean, bright in comparison with a lot of other clarinets I've played, not just the R-13. Were the CTs voiced in this way also?

I have a Selmer Centered Tone "Q" series made in 1958. It has a bright, full, open sound that projects very well. All of the notes on this instrument are clear and full. I use a Vandoren 5JB mpc that works quite well with it. This mpc measures a very open .058 mils and is suitable only for jazz but the tone quality is musical,pleasing to the ear, and very loud when necessary, which is often these days in jazz playing. Many of these instruments are still up for sale and go for around $500 which I consider one of the great bargains in musical instruments today.
