 Free Clarinet Music

After a lot of work....... I pleased to announce the "official" opening of the Clarinet Institute of Los Angeles web site. www.clarinetinstitute.com

We have a vibrant clarinet community here in West Los Angeles, and, with what little spare time I have, I'm doing my best to spread the word and encourage clarinet ensemble playing as much as possible.

The web site is a great resource for any clarinet player. There are a ton of free out-of-copyright clarinet pieces in pdf format. A lot of the music has been lost for decades and only now is being made accessible. We also have lots of midi files and a way to play them so your computer can accompany you while practicing.

I've also listed a number of mp3 files of clarinet performances. There are some of my performances, of course. If anyone has a performance they'd like listed, please email me.

If you are looking for a video of a clarinet performance, I've saved you the trouble of searching on youtube.

There is also a page for new composers. I encourage new composers writing for the clarinet to notify me so I can publicize your music.

It's all free.

Thank you so much!

I managed to figure out how to use the MIDIs with the Van Bosco Karaoke player, and thanks to you, I can practice my exam music while I'm waiting to practice with my real accompanist!

Thank you for all the kind words! The free pdf files are a real great thing, and I've only scratched the surface. There's tons of music out there published in the distant past. It's sitting in stacks and filed away in a million different music collections. It's all gathering dust and will be lost if we don't get started now and scan it. If you have some old music and don't quite know how to go about it, here's the place to ask and I'll give the best advice I can.

The midi files page was inspired by my performance of the Weber 2nd Concerto two years ago. I used a midi file I found on the net and stripped off the clarinet part with the Van Basco program. It was a tremendous help in perfecting the piece. When it came time to rehearse with the orchestra.... well, I had already been playing with accompaniment for some time and everything went smoothly.

As for the recordings page.... well, who doesn't like to listen to clarinet music when working on their computer? If you want to share a recital performance with the world, here's your chance. Just send me an mp3 file of the performance and I'll post it.

We played the two Canzons at my clarinet group today. Everyone was very appreciative. Many thanks.

I recently printed out 'Movimento Perpetuo' (Moto Perpetuo). This is great, and I'm just using it as a warm up at the start of my practice by playing through the first two pages at 80. This is the fastest I can play it whilst keeping the fingers completely relaxed - and even still there a some bits which I'm not totally satisfied with. But after the first two pages at crotchet = 80 my fingers are nicely warmed up and loose.

It would be great to play it to speed, It would sound nice on the clarinet. If I can get it to maybe 100 - 108 (accurately and relaxed!) for the whole thing (eventually) I'll be happy.

Thanks for making this available!

Thank you for this!

One question: Gioseffo Guami's "Canzon" - this one has no second clarinet part. Was this intentional, i.e. does the second clarinet play the first part?

Ooop! I guess even the best editors make mistakes from time to time. I'll fix that mistake and get it re-posted in the next few days.
