 Normandy-France Clarinet model?
Author: linnich49

I recently purchased a wood clarinet marked "Normandy" with France beneath the emblem. The emblem is similar to the Normandy 4 or 10; however, the emblem is not exactly diamond shaped, nor is there a number above the emblem. The first joint has a serial number of #1697. I was told by seller that this was a Leblanc noblet; however, how can you tell? Did I get a good clarinet?

I have been researching the web site and am confused. Thanks for any help.

The Normandy emblem is more heart shaped than diamond shaped.

If it was a Noblet, I really doubt it would have the Normandy name on it. Though, I have seen some Normandys stamped "made by Noblet" on them.

without pictures and additional information, I would guess that it's an early Normandy clarinet. is it all wood, ebonite/plastic ?

Here are some pictures of the clarinet I recently purchased for $211. The emblem is not quite a triangle - With Normandy across it and the word France stamped underneath.
The clarinet plays nice and the tone sounds good. It is wood and all keys work and the pads seal. Just was curious if I got a good quality clarinet. I was hoping for a Noblet, which I understand is a better quality clarinet. Is the Normandy a well made clarinet for the money? I'm new at this and wanted a better tone in the church orchestra. I just started playing again after 30 years and was amazed at the various types of clarinets available. I started years ago on a rubber "Conn" clarinet purchased in the 1970's. I played it last night and today in our musical and got quite a few good compliments from the other players. The tone seems to be different that the one I was playing earlier (renting from a local music company - a wooden Pierre Revan). Just wondered if this is a decent buy for this clarinet.

Thanks for any help.

The Normandys are very nice student (sometime referred to as low intermediate) clarinets. The 4's are the most common. I've had 5, 8, 10, 12 etc in my hands before and other than some different keywork configs they all seem to play roughly the same.

Your body wood color reminds me of my early Noblet 45, which sounded very nice. With your serial number I would think it was an early model before the 4, 8s etc identification. If it sounds good I would think it was a good buy if bought completely ready to play.

at one time i speculated whether the Normandy bodies were provided by Noblet (Leblanc) and Normandy simply provided the keywork as the bores seem to be the same. I wish I checked all the bores of all the variations as some of them have offset instead of inline trill keys.

Steve:

Yes you can go ahead and use my picture. Thanks for your help. From your information, I am assuming that I did not buy a Noblet clarinet, but did get a decent clarinet for the price.

Let me know if you need any additional pictures.
