 Nobel Prize Concert
Author: Alphie
Date:   2007-12-07 18:49

Tomorrow night we’ll have our annual Nobel Prize Concert, this year featuring pianist Lang Lang playing solo pieces and Rachmaninoff’s 2nd piano concerto. The rest of the program is Wagner Overture to Meistersinger and Ravel Daphnis and Chloe.
It’s the 3rd year we are doing this. First year we had cellist Yo-Yo Ma and last year René Fleming. Presentation is always very high class and will be broadcasted in several countries. If you see this announced at a TV station near you don’t miss it. Lang Lang’s playing is arousing.

There was a masterclass which Daniel Barenboim was coaching Lang Lang in a Beethoven Sonata.

Was interesting what Barenboim had him change.

Alphie, cool concert lineup!!

Yes I saw that too, it was very interesting.

That would be like Combs coaching Ricardo.

I played at the Scotia Music Festival where there was a masterclass by Shifrin whom our Cellist didn't want to be coached by as he felt that he was his equal.

My Cellist was former Principal Cellist St. Louis Sym. and the Vermeer Quartet.

Made for an interesting time....

"didn't want to be coached by as he felt that he was his equal"

In sport it is commonplace for top competitors to be coached by retired competitors - often competitors who had never reached the top in their own day. Shame that (some) musicians can't be as open-minded.

It was absolutely close minded. The Cellist was there as a performer as well as a conducting student. Pianist in the group didn't have a problem with the coaching and she was staff pianist for Dorothy DeLay at Juilliard.

Alphie, what position are you in the Orchestra - principal? The Rachmaninoff has some really gorgeous solos. Please link us if there's an internet link to the performance to see it.

Alphie speaks of a "High class presentation." With that clown Lang Lang on the bill! Come on.... "Class" has nothing to do with Lang Lang, except perhaps "low class."

David, I don't think there will be a link for that concert since it has a commercial value. The Nobel prize ceremony took place earlier today. Some clips are here including some music clips I think you'll be able to find easily:
