 Contrasting Tone
Author: MichaelR

This was inspired by GBK's recent post "Can you overlook tone for interpretation? "

As one (of the many?) who is still developing his ear I listened to a lot of recommended performers[1] with an intent of developing a stronger appreciation for good tone.

It would be very helpful to listen to two, or more, performers with different tonal qualities doing the same piece in quick succession. The idea being to listen to the contrasting piece while the memory of the first is still fresh. Certainly when I developed taste sensitivity side by side comparisons were invaluable for demonstrating and imprinting sensitivity.

What recommendations do you have for contrast and compare recording pairs?

[1] Currently in my rotation at work are Sean Osborn, Reginald Kell, Don Byron, Jimmie Noone, Howard Kluge, Sherman Friedland, Tomas Svoboda, Anat Cohen, Caracas Clarinet Quartet, Emma Johnson, Benny Goodman and a couple of other I'm not recalling at the moment. At home there are a few others including some Klezmer and a wider jazz representation.

I don't know what recordings are out there, but some professional clarinetists with VERY different and distinct tones (IMO) you can probably find some recordings of the same pieces from some of these artists (just gonna mention the FEW clarinetists that I know that have a decent amount of recordings out and therefore probably have crossovers of a few songs . . .)

-Thea King (very unique sound)
-Emma Johnson
-Stanley Drucker
-Richard Stoltzman
-Ricardo Morales
-Benny Goodman (you can hear him play Copland Concerto and Mozart Concerto with his distinct tone and compare to others)
-Sabine Meyer

I'm not going to say I can name the player from hearing a clip, but if you play pretty much any two of these back to back, you'll be able to notice that their sounds are different and it's definitely NOT the same player.

I am interested in the contrasting/blending/provocative/copying tone qualities of two (or) more clarinetists playing duets. Some think that the two players should match their tone, but I think that the duo benefits from being able to tell the difference between the participants.

Last week, my teacher blew me away by mocking my tone (and phrasing) --making it sound like I was home listening to a recording of my practice. (ARRGGHHH).

How I wish I could copy HIS tone.

Girko . then Leister,Cohen, Combs and more. All great , but different, just as their music director wanted. For me Girko is tops for tonal expression.
