I have just a quick question.
I came across a Buffet (supposedly an R-13) A clarinet the other day and it was described as having a letter in front of the serial number first then the number. Is this a "true" R-13 clarinet? Or is there another model that came about in the time of around 1960?
Thanks for all your help.

If there is a letter in the serial number, either in front or at then end, the clarinet probably dates from before 1929 and is not an R13. The R13 was first released in the early 1950s. The older Buffets are not necessarily bad but they don't have the poly-cylindrical bore of the R13.

If it's an "F" and has a serial number > 55000 then it's an R13 for the French (European) market - tuned a bit above A=440
