 Ault XX Supreme (Barbeir)Clarinet??
Author: haberc

Hi, I have an old wood clarinet with a low serial number - 821. Bell and barrel are marked Ault XX Supreme Import. I also have a letter dated 1983 from Selmer Company saying this is a Barbeir Clarinet, with a production date of July 30, 1931.

Can anyone give me any further information about this clarinet. Needs a complete repad so right now I don't know what it sounds like.

Thanks for any info!

The 1931 Selmer catalogue lists the Barbier at the bottom of the company's line of student instruments. Most of the Barbiers by that time were metal (I own one) or hard rubber. The wooden Barbier was available in two Boehm system models that year, one with 17 keys and 6 rings at a suggested retail price of $62 (model 1310) and the other with 17 keys and 7 rings (model 1312) at a suggested retail price of $72.

The Barbier also came in three wooden Albert system models in 1931, one with 15 keys and two rings for $26 (model 1301), another with 15 keys and 4 rings for $30 (model 1303) and a third with 15 keys, 4 rings and an unspecified number of rollers for $34 (model 1305). The two hard rubber models (both Boehm) were priced the same as the wooden ones, with the metal models priced higher.

The metal Boehm model of Barbier with 17 keys and 6 rings (1308M) sold for $65. The Barbier Special model with 17 keys and 7 rings (1310M) retailed for $85.

For comparison, the Model 20, Selmer's highest priced grenadilla clarinet in that 1931 catalogue, had 20 keys and 7 rings and sold for $170. The highest priced metal clarinet, the silver-plated Master Model no. 20M, also with 20 keys and 7 rings, sold for $195.

May I repeat TKS, Lelia, you have helped me date a Sel-Paris 20/7 FB Bb which I gave to NMM, who said it was a Model 25, so ?? I also [still] have a GM Bundy 17/7 of that same time period, [I guess], with the beginning of Selmer in the USA. Thots? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Ault Music was a major music store in Ft. Worth, Tx area until it's demise in the early '70's when it was sold to C&S/Brook Mays. The store had several different instruments imported with the "Ault" name. Working sales and eventually managing (assistant) Ault Music was my first job after graduating from TCU. It was a very nice building located in downtown Ft. Worth.

Hi - I found my very old clarinet from the late 60's at my moms house. Is shows AULT XX Supreme on several parts. Does this have any value? I have found very little information on the web about this instrument. All I remember is that I was a very rebellious child and did not want to play the clarinet!
