Differences between Fobes Nova & Professional SF models?
Author: Ashley91489

Would I benefit much more to pay over twice as much for the SF model or should I try the Nova?

I'm also considering trying a Pomarico Crystal and Vandoren B45dot Profile 88.

Thoughts on the Pomarico Crystal in particular? I was thinking of getting the Sapphire as it looks like the closest in comparison to the Vandoren 2Tone B45dot I'm currently playing on.

Thanks!

Hi Ashley --

What is it that you are trying to accomplish with a new mouthpiece? I.E., what is it you are hoping a new mouthpiece would improve or modify or change, in comparison to the mouthpiece you are playing now?

The Nova and the SF are very similar mouthpieces. I've played both. The SF is smoother, more elegant, more refined. In fact, I went through all three of the Fobes mouthpieces in that same facing -- first the Debut, then the Nova, then the SF. Each time, I thought the "upgrade" couldn't possibly be better than the one I had. But each time, there was a distinct improvement the sound and responsiveness, within the parameters of this mouthpiece design.

I would think that the Fobes CF facing is very different from the B45, however. (I've never used a B45, but from what I read, the Fobes is going to feel quite a bit easier.)

I purchased a SF Fobes CF+ built on a Babbit blank a few years ago and like the mouthpiece better than his Zinner SF, which is a fine mouthpiece. I was talking to Clark Fobes at the Atlanta Clarinetfest and asked if I could buy another SF Babbit from him. His reply was that he is now making what used to be the SF Babbit CF+ but he is now calling it the Nova. I don't know if the new Nova mouthpiece is marked any different from the old ones. It was my understanding there is more hand finishing done in the new ones.

Clark would be the best qualified person to answer these questions.

The most obvious difference that I am aware of, as mentioned above is that Clark's SF series is made from a Zinner blank that is of his own design. The Nova series is made from Babbitt blanks.

I have much more experience playing the SF series, and have only played one Nova a couple of years ago. It was quite good, although for my personal tastes and playing, I would agree with the assessment form ohsuzan above on the playing characteristics. The SF series is (for me) a richer more refined mouthpiece, worth the difference in price.

You would have to try them and see what is best for you.
