I've been playing my used Bundy bass clarinet now for about, oh, 5 months now. And after trying many brands of different reeds I finally found one that sounds great! It's a Vandoren (Java) 3.5 tenor sax reed and combined (I guess) with my Rovner lig and Selmer C85/120 mouthpiece and the "wrong embouchure" (bottom lip out) I'm getting a great tone! Well, great to me anyway... It sounds almost just right. So go on, congratulate me!
Oh, and I know this reed won't last forever, so any suggestions as to how I should properly (or appropriately) archive, display, or destroy it for posterity after it wears out would be appreciated.
Edited for correction of reed type.

Proper reed retirement depends entirely on the reason for said retirement. If the reed becomes uncooperative, the wall test will be necessary.

And if the wall test fails, I might recommend the music rack test.
Replacement reed?? You might consider trying a Legere 3.0 bass clarinet of tenor sax reed. Durability, consistancy and credabile sound are just some of the perks.

Ahem. I'm making my stupid pet human type this for me. I'll just borrow Lelia's squishy primate brain here for a moment and make her think she's dozed off at the computer, before she writes something more inane than usual. Yes, the other day when she'd finished making horrible noises on her screech-stick, she gave a reed the Shadow Cat Test. I think she only wanted to see what I'd do. Well, what do you THINK I'd do, you ape-descended degenerates? I lowered my standards of what goes into my mouth just long enough to convey the horrid little object to my litter box, of course. Once I'd finished burying the remains, I told her to replace the sand immediately, but do you think she obeyed me?
Sssssssssst!

As a bass clarinet player myself, I have also had those AMAZING reeds where the sound that I desire finally comes out of my accursed instrument. I'm keeping the reed that I first got a great sound out of for framing or bronzing=).... It also happens to be a tenor Java 3.5. I'd reccomend those suckers to anyone.
By the way, I used to use a rovner too. It was my baby, and I absolutely adored it until my college instructor screamed at me (well... he didn't ACTUALLY scream....) until I bought a Vandoren Optimum for the bass clarinet. I will NEVER go back!!! I know they're pricey, but you might want to think about it.
