i recently found a very old clarinet and cannot find any info on it! the barrel is wood, the horn is engraved in fancy script 'MEYER' and on the back is stamped 'Made in Czechoslovakia'. there is no mouthpiece. on both upper and lower joint it is stamped with a large 'G" with some sort of pan flute in the upper part of the G and then a banner over it that reads 'ARDELL' with New York under that. the s/n is C1020. any help on identifying anything about this would be appreciated.

Looks like a Meyer from Kraslice (which is where Kohlert and Keilwerth were and Amati is manufacturing today).
Can you supply a picture of that beast?

The only clarinet I've seen going by the name 'Meyer' (engraved on the bell) was made by Amati (Czech), and unusual of an Amati-built clarinet of it's age as it was all wood - most of them in the UK had ebonite bells (well, the ones that went under the names Corton, Lafleur and B&H 400), wooden bodies and barrels.
If it is all wood, then it's the same as the current Amati ACL-311. If it has an ebonite bell (that has most likely turned green over time), then it's the same as an ACL-211.

You can make a BBoard "archives" Search, using - Meyer Czech - and find a post by David S with some info. An EM to him might bring up more , he is a fine repairer, incidentally. Search use of Meyer [only] will bring many hits due to Sabine Meyer's artistry [in Germany etc]. Luck, Don

twinpeak13 mailed me some pictures - here they are.
Just for the record, my trusty Amati 211 is still among the best horses in my stable. That specific Meyer is not equal to today's Amati 211/3xx models - those have metal lined tenons in the upper joint.

That's even older than I imagined.
Looks more Kohlert-like.

I happen to have an Amati 211 here right now and I wouldn't say it is great.... This specific one has a middle tenon longer than the socket, so it can't get all the way in. After the clarinet is fixed I will check if that really affects intonation because it is only about 0.3mm. I can't really judge with its condition now but intonation sounds ok. If it does need to have the tenon shortened, those metal hats make it just more difficult to do (not that they don't have their advantages) and would not be worth for such an instrument. The tone holes have sharp edges so it is no surprise that after only 3 or 4 years this clarinet already has many torn pads. I don't think the not very high quality pads helped with that either. The spring on the A key also has some problems, and probably other that I didn't check yet. It feels good and comfortable in general. I just checked and this model is a lot cheaper than a B12 and YCL-250. Probably a reasonable clarinet if you have/want to buy new and don't have much to spend.
One more thing , Ben, does your Amati 211 have the logo on the barrel? If it does, is it painted or also engraved like on the other parts? In pictures I've seen there is a logo on the barrel but on this one I have here there isn't, and there is no sign of a logo either (no engraving, no left over paint, nothing). It's definitely the original barrel.
Thanks.

Clarnibass,
the logo on all parts (mpc, barrel, UJ and bell) is engraved, not just painted. The pads, by the way, are Pisoni pads.
What does the mfgr stamp say? "Made in Czechoslovakia" or "...in Czech Republic"? Mine says the latter, it was bought new in 2005 off a firesale, probably manufactured in 2003 or 2004.
I have done a number of 3xx models with unmarked barrels, and they were all marked "Czechoslovakia".

This one says "Made in Czech Republic". The serial number is 2084XX. UJ and bell have engraving and colour of logo, barrel no marks at all but definitely original. I was told this clarinet was bought new about 3 or 4 years ago. I don't know what model of pads from Pisoni (i.e. now Music Center) they use but it is different from the Music Center pads I have.

They're Pisoni's "Mypads". At least that's what the back says. I had to change only one, and not because it was torn. It was the F#/B pad (the uppermost on the LJ that closes with the rings), it started being sticky, and my pet peeve is the hiss/buzz of that pad (along with the . So I replaced it with something homemade.
Well, maybe I was just lucky. (I do have a 251 (plastic "C") that also comes with an engraved barrel, no quality issues either.) Will post the s/n of my 211 if you're interested.
Edit: the S/N of my 211 is 2109xx.

so my specific questions would be:
A) about how old is this
B) are the parts from 3 different clarinets ( the barrel being wooden with nothing on it, the bell being different from the other pieces saying 'Ardinell'
C) cannot find anything ON Ardinell - any info?
thanks for the input. i do not play or really know anything about clarinets, it was just something given to me.......
