What are clarinet pads made out of?
Author: Margaret

Hello,

I'm wondering what clarinet pads are made out of. I read something somewhere about fish bladders and have not been able to find anything else about it. Many people seem to sell them, but no one states the composition of them. I'm just curious, and would like to know.

Thanks,

Margaret

The "skin" is made from sheep intestines, like sausage skins. Underneath there is felt, and a cardboard back.

Is the thinness of pad skin the natural thinness or is it scithed down in production?

Pads vary in thickness depending on the thickness of the felt or card backing (or a combination of both).

Tough for vegans to be woodwind players!

Since a bit of humor has surfaced, my reply might have been "sugar and spice etc." or "puppy dog tails".
Shouldn't we have mentioned leather-covered, plastics [PVC and others] " rubber" [synthetics prob.]? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Hmm. Leather, Latex and Rubber. Google's first hit probably wouldn't be a woodwind pad site. [tongue]

Then there's Gore-Tex pads that Buffet use on their pro clarinets which have an outer layer of PTFE covering an inner layer of goldbeater's skin, and the usual felt and card disc within that as found on standard skin pads.

Lorenzo Tio, Jr., an early New Orleans jazz clarinet player, cut his mother's leather gloves up and used them to make pads for his clarinet. He also put eucalyptus leaves in his cap to keep from getting his head sunburned when playing outdoors.

I have tried using thick leather glued to a cardboard baking as pads, too. It worked quite well except for the problem that leather invariably has... Sticking!
