Has anyone used the free classified ads or Used Instrument Buyer or any other online service to sell their clarinet and had good luck with them?
Thanks Gwynn

No.

These generate more Nigerian Check cashing scams than anything else.

Even SOTW nets tire kickers (unless you're selling a Selmer MkVI sax).

This website, and eBay work.

As with any sale, let payment clear your bank BEFORE shipping.

I've both sold and bought through the woodwind.org classifieds.

Never a problem ...GBK

The Nigerian Check Scam is popular here, too ...

Create a "junk" email account before you post - you can stop using / delete the account after you've sold the instrument.

I have a good luck selling mine.

You will receive lots of bogus check scam mail from UK but just ignore them
or delete. Never ever believe their claim.

But many legitimate buyers also reading.

You can also offer other protections to those selling/buying online. You can offer to create a private ebay bid where they can buy it through ebay (set a "buy it now" price) so they AND you have the backing of ebay's security against phony sellers/bidders. You can use escrow.

Personally, I've both bought and sold stuff through these classifieds and not have had any problems. Everything was described correctly and what was supposed to show up.

If you want to sell and don't trust these classifieds there are some sites you can sel on consignment (a third party that keeps a portion of the selling price, but they hold the clarinet and do the selling for you)

I always try and do a online background check. Such as call them and things like that (I work for a collections agency - IT - so there's alot of free stuff out there if you know where to check).

It makes it much easier though when the buyer is from ClarinetBB or SOTW or other sites then they have a history trail.

I also try to have a conversation with them - phone or email - you learn alot about them.

I haven't had much luck selling instruments here on the classifieds. Generally when I've gotten any response at all, it's been too late -- sometimes many months after I've sold the instrument through other means.

Like Dave says, a lot of times if you just rely on this board, it could take a while. I've seen some items up on the classifieds for MONTHS and MONTHS. Then again, I bought something on he classifieds about thirty days after it being posted and some probably sooner.

Like anything else, it's pretty much a crapshoot. But it is free....
