My New/Used Evette (finally) - How old?
Author: haptown

Well I finally bought my own clarinet and I've given my friend back the Selmer he loaned me.
The clarinet in question is a very nice Evette. I had four different clarinets to choose from and the Evette was (to me) the best of the bunch). I am fortunate enough to have a very good friend who plays bassoon for the Nashville Symphony and she listened to me play the clarinets and gave me feedback on which sounded the best.
Now I'm interested to find out how old this clarinet is - I've searched on here but haven't found anything to help me narrow it down. Maybe someone on here will have an answer for me?
Here are the particulars:
The logo is an oval with Evette in the center, Paris above and France below. Under this in small print is "Made By Buffet Crampon".
The serial number is D4228 and it says "Made in France" above the serial number.
Thanks,
Andy

I'm going to guess somewhere around 1960 give or take a year or two.
But it's just a guess.

Those are nice horns, people will tell you they are the predecessor to the E11 but they are nothing like an E11, way better actually! The E11 has German keywork and the D Evettes have French, more R13ish keywork, really nice R13ish bells (E11 bells are not very high quality at all) and much nicer wood than the E11 too!

Thanks susieray,

Well my wife owns a Buffet R13 from the 60's and we just did the side by side comparison and you're right about the bells and the keywork - they are identical to my (and her) eyes. It has a very nice tone and I'm having a ball playing it.

Just to provide a little more confirmation, I think Susie Ray is pretty much on target, at least if the old Buffet search engine was in the ballpark. That search function, unlike the current one, included some student models. As I recall, when I entered D1 for the Evettes, it returned a date of 1960. Your number is low enough that it likely was made within a few years of that.

Best regards,
jnk

Recalling that a number of us have discussed Evette's relationship to Buffet several times, I made a quickie Search via Evette Sponsored Buffet and [re]found a world of info, in partic. Jack K's and Vytas' contributions, and wish to "nominate" them as "Evette Experts".
Among the many posts, there may be mine, rejoicing how well my wood E [no letter in the ser #] plays. So, congrats to all. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
