Hi:
I bought a Normandy 4 clarinet on Ebay with the idea of having it overhauled for my own use. Although the seller claims that the parts match I can't help wondering. The 2 main sections are labeled Normandy 4 but the barrel and bell and just labeled Normandy. The bell is a much redder color that the rest of the horn. Not sure if I should have it overhauled or not? I know the barrels and bells are not generally interchangable. Any thoughts?

Hello,
I'm certainly no expert, but my Normandy 4 clarinet is just like that. The '4' is only in the crest on the two main joints and the barrel and the bell just have a plain crest, with no number. Check the back of each of the joints for a serial number. If they match, that is probably what the seller meant when you were informed that the clarinet matched. Niether my barrel nor my bell have a serial number on them, and my bell appears to have more reddish tones in the grain as well.

At the factory, bells come out of one bin, barrels come out of another bin , as I understand it. No matching of wood is practical , maybe not even possible. Not to say that bells and barrels do not affect overall acoustics; they do.
