 "On table" & "Oval" ??

Would someone kindly explain in detail what these terms mean in regard to mouthpieces.
Thanks!

These are the older Selmer blanks, I believe the TABLE ones are older than the ovals....The oval came as standard equipment with the Centered Tone. They have a larger bore than the later Selmer blanks. Instead of having HS* (or whatever) on the back of the piece it is marked right on the table. I am sure Vytas has a picture of one he can attach (if he's reading this thread!)

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention that most of the sound you get is up to you, not your equipment, you don't need a CT to sound like Benny Goodman. Listen to Ken Peplowski for example, he plays a Buffet R13 and a Portnoy mouthpiece.

Thank You, Susieray, fine pic and discussion. A while back I came upon a Table Sel, HS* I believe,. Not being my fav. [I like longer lay, and wider tips} I gave it to my pro friend in Tulsa who uses it, at times, in our comm. band. With my Mark 6 alto sax, I have 2 50's mps , a C* and a D, with a lot of info on the tables, which outplay newer, good mps. At least, back then, Selmer paid close attention the mp/inst "matching", IMHO. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Susieray,

Ok. So, the "table" is that flat part in front, and if the impression is there, one assumes it's from an older blank. I'm still unclear about "oval". What distinguishes it from a newer model? The reason why I ask, is that I have a 1953 Selmer (though technically not a Centered-Tone, it is of the same lot, just the European version...same large bore, etc.) and I'm having a hard time finding the appropriate mouthpiece.
Are the new HS** of the same design as the old?
Or would it be better to find a "table" or "oval" version and hope it isn't too banged up or tone-dead (as some mps lose their lustre with age)?
Thanks for your time!
And thanks for sending the attachment.

Selmer 53,

No, the new ones are not the same. The older ones are made from a different rubber and also a larger bore than the newer ones.

You can look for an older one but chances are it will need to be refaced. If I were looking for one I would not hesitate to get in touch with Vytas!

Vytas & Susieray (my two new bestest friends!),
Next concern...
How do I know whether the mouthpiece will work for me if I can't try it first?
I have a Bay Chedeville copy and a Vandoren 5RV, which I purchased after extensive trying of at least a dozen mps. They were the only two that appealed to me.
Still, the Bay is focused & clean but lacks "character" (and I don't mean player character) and the 5RV has the "character" I like but is far too airy & inconsistent focus-wise.
Any suggestions?
