I performed this on one of my recitals, and if memory serves me, then the Op. number is 11. I could be wrong....and probably am. However, I am reletively sure that he only wrote one such piece.

Good luck,
Frank

Actually, there is a second...I think it's Op. 38, but I can't remember for sure. It may come up listed as piano, violin, and cello, though, because he wrote an alternate part for the clarinet. I've also played the Op. 11, and it's lots of fun--but then, we had a coach who kept telling us to be more "tastefully ugly" ;-) Hope that helps!

Don -

Beethoven (note spelling) wrote the Op. 11 trio for clarinet, cello and piano, with an alternative violin part for the top line. See my posting from about a year ago on the theme-and-variations third movement at <A HREF=http://www.sneezy.org/Databases/Logs/1999/01/000095.txt>http://www.sneezy.org/Databases/Logs/1999/01/000095.txt<A>.

The Septet, Op. 20, was written for a clarinet-playing prince and thus has the clarinet leading throughout. Beethoven later transcribed it for clarinet, cello and piano and published it as Op. 38. The trio version works well but I think it loses a lot without the other instrumental colors. It's also long and very tiring to play, since you have to play everything that's played by the other instruments in the original version.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
