someone told me that he uses two cushions on his mpc. he puts one of the black vandoren cushioins on first and then he puts one of the clear ones on top of that. he claims that this prevents biting down on the mouthpiece and will open the sound dramatically. Has anyone heard of this before? Pros v. Cons?

(Radical proposal--- the entire mpc should be designed to cushion the upper lip so that one could, in effect, play double lip confortably and well, maybe even sounding like McLane.) But, do not bite your present mpc. Your mpc should not have any teeth marks show up if you play properly and cushions will not be needed .

That does not make a whole lot of sense to me. I would rather have more pressure from my top lip then my bottom lip when I play. Having downward pressurre on the mouthpiece is in most situations a good thing. If you put that much material on the mouthpiece, it seems to me like you have to bite more to get a good seal on the mouthpiece.
It is true that not bitting will open up your sound but pinching or choking the sound happens in our throat, mouth, and even chest as well. There is a lot more to it than just some stickers on a mouthpiece.
I guess it's worth a try but I have never heard that before and would never look to a sticker on a mouthpiece to help me with voicing and sound production.

I have a rather radical proposition, should anyone care to try. Position your mouthpiece cushion such that your teeth rests just mms away from the bare mouthpiece and on the cushion, with the uncushioned part of the mouthpiece in your mouth.

I use them as they prevent the mouthpiece from sliding.
