Could someone assist me in determining the approximate age of a C.G. Conn Albert System Clarinet? Serial # B126844L. It appears to be made of hard rubber, and it has rollers. The kid I bought it from said it was his grandfather's. Thanks!

Didn't Rollers [for clarinet] go out of style , like high button shoes, about 1910? An early Penzel-Mueller F B had rollers, my 1920's P-M F B and a Selmer F B did not. Saxes still use "some". Don

I also have a clarinet that seems the same, although i believe mine is wooden. I've always thought it was about 1930's or so...CA

Hi: Does anyone know if C.G. Conn still produced the Albert System clarinets in the 30's? It sounds like a good guess. I know there are others out there with old Conn's. Also, what was the quality of this type of clarinet considered in it's day....was the hard rubber clarinet considered the "student, or entry, model?" Also, it has a bird design on it, was this Conn's logo?
I guess I'm developing a bit of interest in clarinet history, maybe from others on this board!

Hi Cindy - Dont really know, but yes, probably. Being somewhat acquainted with NMM at U of S D, I looked on their web-site, since they have many Conn insts. and history info, but only 5 alto cls are listed. Conn's early records were destroyed in a factory fire. By 1930, Boehm cls were much preferred, my first Bb sop was a mediocre wood 17/6, no-name which I can recall. A few lesson-years later, 1934?, I bot my teacher's P-M Full Boehm and improved. Other music museums, Smithsonian, NY, U of Mich, Fiske Museum [Claremont, CA] may also have collection lists [and do have knowledgable clarinetists], and we may have some Conn cl "buffs" here on BB to help. Good luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
