Please follow this link to check out the Website of Andy Statman, an amazing improvising clarinetist in the klezmer tradition:

Andy is an exemplar of this style of playing; Jim Whitney, the bassist in his group, is a good friend, and tells me that Andy unfortunately recently broke his arm and will be out of commission for a while, so please do take a look.

Andy is also an amazing mandolin player.

I'm not sure what happened, I believe it may have been a fall. Jim said he will likely be out of commission at least through the rest of this year. One of their regular gigs was every week at the Greenwich Village Synagogue, very cool scene. The music is amazing; many of the tunes don't even have names, they come from from very old traditional melodies. Andy would just start some of them and the Trio would join in on incredible improvisations.

I broke my wrist in 1998 and was out of the game for about 6 weeks; I was pretty miserable, and lost a lot of work.

Let's be careful out there, folks!

At least a bone is easier to heal than a soft tissue injury, damage to the muscles and tendons. I had a car accident almost 4 months ago and the last of the muscle and joint repairs is taking far longer than I'd hoped for. The physiotherapist said that this is the way it goes for soft tissue damage. It's almost better to have a broken bone. So I can still work at the computer and earn a living, and play clarinet, but the forearm gets very sore with the strain. Preparing for a performance in a couple weeks is uncomfortable and I have to rely on the other arm for carrying the cases.

Just FYI, after rereading Jim's original email,

Andy broke his right shoulder and right wrist in a fall a couple of weeks ago, not good.

After my broken wrist, I went through physical rehab for about 6 weeks; very painful, but afterwards, my left hand/wrist was stronger than my right for the first time in my life. They really can work wonders. There were no after effects at all; I was fortunate.

Good luck to all the injured. Probably one of the most tragic accidents in recent years was suffered by Rachael Barton Pine. Her recovery has to be an inspiration to all of us.
