 Rigotti Gold Reeds
Author: Sara

I was looking into trying out these reeds in hopes to find a better alternative to my V12. Decides the remarkable price difference, I was wondering if anyone could tell their experiences with these, good or bad, I want to hear em all! Oh and I need to know which one are the equivilant of the V12 3's that i use now, I can't seem to find the reed comparison chart in the WW & BW catalogue anymore! Thanks a lot!

I dig the Rigotti Golds. They're pretty good. Play extremely well out of the box, and sound good. V12s tend (for me) to play a slight bit longer, and to allow more dynamic control (especially in the low chalemeau). I keep a box of both in my case.

Sara;

I've used the Rigotti Gold reeds. To me they seem to run about a 1/4 to 1/2 strength weaker than the V12s. They also come in substrengths. For instance, the Rigotti Gold #3 reeds come in Soft, Medium and Hard.

However, they're only available from WW&BW. They always seem to be on backorder.

Cheers,

Paul

Are they in high demand or is it just a WW and BW exclusive thing? Because i can't seem to find them anywhere else. Thanks for your comments by the way. So basically the only eal difference between the V12 and Rigotti is the price and strengths?

V12 was designed after MORRE reeds unavailable these quater century. It is a german cut reed with narrow width and thick heel(3.15mm) and is known to be especially good for long lay and small tip clearance mouthpieces. I do not think Rigotti designs their design as such. Besides, Vandoren chose to use thinner density cane(near surface cane) provably for tonal consideration. That's, I guess, why V12 is softer than the same number of traditional Vandorens. (These can be read in Klarinet archive. I write this from my memory.)

As to lead time, it is two to three months,or more!!

WW&BW has an exclusive on U.S. distribution. I found their reeds to be quite nice. I was looking for an alternative to V12's. FWIW, after playing half a box, I felt that they were about a 1/4 to 1/2 strength weaker as Paul stated previously; and a little bit brighter in sound (for me). They played nicely out of the box with no need to tweak on my part. For my taste and sound, I'll stick with V12's and continue the HUNT! :>) mw
