 Luisa Miller Overture
Author: Sylvain
Date:   2007-09-28 18:31

Hi all,
I am playing in a concert dedicated to opera literature. We are playing Luisa Miller overture and it has a nifty and beautiful clarinet solo. The only information I could gather was that it was written for C clarinet. Anybody know where I can get the excerpt or better the part?
Thanks!

$3.75 for the part.

It's not all C clarinet - some is Bb (there's a key change).

But the really challenging parts are in C - lots of throat tone played with flute.

It's a great solo.

larryb, did you play the solo on Bb? I have a C, but am afraid that the intonation quirks of a C clarinet will convince me to do the solo on Bb.

Yes, I played it all on Bb, transposing where necessary.

I forget how much of a rest there would be if you're switching clarinets. I have to check my part.

Reviving the thread. The concert is long past, but
here is a recording of how it turned out.
Flames and praise are always welcome (constructive criticism too).
In any case thank you for your help!

Very nice!

I'd say you nailed it.

Is that your C clarinet?

The opening solo was written in Bb, then there is a switch to C in the middle of the piece. I used my Forte C clarinet for the C part. I think the intonation with the flute was overall ok.

Great job,Sylvain. I'm almost ashamed to admit I'd never heard Luisa previously.
Love that Joe Green!

Many years ago I played in a full opera performance of "Luisa Miller", every night for a week. One night my car broke down in the middle of nowhere - complete darkness (no street lights), no houses. There were four of us and luckily a lorry stopped to give us a lift to the venue. As there was not room for all of us in the cab, two of us had to stand in the back of the lorry. We had no gloves and the temperature was below freezing. In addition, the lorry had recently been carrying lime. We arrived late and the MD was keen to start. So I had to play the solos in the overture wirh numb fingers, a mouthful of lime and in a now white dinner-suit. Not to be recommended!
