 Eb Clarinet Trouble
Author: Phil from OZ

My student recently purchased a new Buffet Prestige Eb clarinet. When measured against my Eb it is just over a fifth of an inch longer. I have had some of the professionals around town try it out and even they have trouble trying to bring it up to A440. Has anyone else had this problem, or know what to do about it?

Most "pros" who play Eb or C clarinets a lot have their barrel joints shortened to compensate for the low pitch of their instruments. It is a simple proceedure that does not harm the playing characteristics of clarinet in any way except to allow it to play "up" to pitch. It can be done by any repair technician in about two hours. Have you tried a Chadash barrel? They improve the sound a bit but you still will have to have it shortened a bit. good luck!!!
