-Do what leadership says, not what they do
-Do whatever they (staff, etc.) say unless it is illegal, immoral, or dangerous (and, if it is something else that you just don't like, complain later in private)
-Memorize your music ASAP
-Try synthetic/plastic reeds, they work really well for marching
-March a cheaper plastic instrument, not your wooden concert horn
-know that even if something seems pointless, most likely it is not.
-go for a good "big" sound, not for a "loud" sound
-HAVE FUN!
My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

Last week I went to the Tennessee Vols game in Knoxville and noticed that none of the clarinets were painted orange. I thought that would have been cool. (I mean painting a plastic clarinet; painting an Opus wouldn't be cool)

> Painting? You can BUY them in orange!
Orange? I don't want a carrot, nor am I a Dutch soccer fan. - The de rigueur colour is pink this season.

And then there is the music store here in Vancouver that would exchange pieces between a red one and green one, and put them on display at Christmas.

Another tip:
Use a cheap mouthpiece that will be no loss when you ruin it.
Keep your good clarinet, mouthpiece and reeds FAR AWAY from the football field.

For the first year, I would agree with ElBlufer. Then when you've gotten the marching thing out of your system, align with DavidBlumberg, and move on to something else.
I am curious, though: what does a "phat" marching band sound like?

One big tip is to be sure to wipe and dry off your Clarinet COMPLETELY inside and out when you play in the rain.
It will happen and a student of mine once borrowed a plastic junker buffet B-10 that she (stupidly!!) didn't dry off after a rainy performance.
It mildewed.....
I trashed the instrument

Agreed. Wipe everything down, and also let the instrument sit in an illuminated room overnight with the case open. The air circulation and light will cut the chances of mildew. You don't want to ruimn any instrument, even a plastic junker!

Er...aren't we getting a bit paranoid there? Illuminated room? C'mon.
On the other hand it should be common practice to always swab, (kitchen paper) dry and air any instrument before re-boxing it, regardless how wet or dry it has been.

You're right, Ben, but I figured on this board, that would go without saying. Silly me!

Don't let your sound get nasty because you're playing too loud. I constantly have students who have to work on their embouchure each year because marching band ruins it.
