 ODE TO JOY

Hello!!!

Can someone please explain to me why is the note B (second staff, 5th measure) played here? When I played the note, it did not sound right to me. The same holds true for the A on the same staff 6th measure.

Thanks

Henry Padilla

Looks like a harmony part, meant to be played along with other musicians playing other parts, one of which would be the actual melody.

So, bbarner I do not play this part? How do I know that in the future? This is the book 1 of the essential elements 2000 and unless I did not noticed I was not aware of any instructions. As a new student, I see this staff and I am just trying to play it. Nevertheless when I listen to it does not make any sense.

Especially when just starting out:

Always play what's written - unless instructed to play something different by the conductor, section leader, or teacher.

Sometimes what "sounds right" is wrong for the part you're playing.

The clarinet part for "Ode To Joy" found in book 1 of Essential Elements 2000 is part of an elementary band arrangement by John Higgins.

If you play the recording which accompanies the book, you will hear that when you are playing the harmony notes in measures 11 and 12, the flutes continue with the melody...GBK
