I have a 40yr old Selmer clarinet that I recently inherited. How do I determine
what key the clarinet is and what its value might be? It has a 4-digit seriel number on it and it has the Selmer Paris logo. Thank you.

Hi,
If it has the Selmer Paris logo with a wreath under and is 40 years old, I'd guess a Selmer Series 9 and in the key of Bb. If you can post a picture of the logo on the upper section, tell us if there is a letter with the serial number, and send a measurement of the assembled upper and lower section (probably not need for the bell, barrel, or MP), we can rule out key of A and Eb.

The two sections joined measure 18". I'm enclosing a picture of the bell engraving info. The glare might be too much for you to make it out. It says:
Ebo-Tone
Made By
S.M.L
Paris
France
The seriel number is: 5023 (no letter before this). There doesn't appear to be a wreath per se but the words "Made By" appear within a banner.
Thanks again.

I'll try again with this picture. Seems I've incurred the wraith of Earthlink today.

Hi - lurch 9, the 18" almost certainly makes it a Bb cl, HOWEVER its Not a Selmer, despite the initials. S M L is Strasser Marigaux[sp?] Lemaire, a French maker of a "line" of quite good insts back in the 1950's +. I suggest you make an archives Search for those 3 names, we have discussed their insts several times, and I believe Dave Spieg. [and others] are quite familiar with their cl "stable" . Will like to see a pic. Luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Did 1970s SML clarinets have one-piece cast nickel silver keywork (including the key cups)?
I've worked on older Marigaux oboes that have cast keys (except for the long key barrels), and the only way to tell is when the pads are removed as the insides of the pad cups aren't all machined.

Just to tie up the Selmer-Malerne-SML thingy, Selmer Sterling clarinets (and that's Selmer London, probably distributed by Dallas) were made by Malerne.

...I think it's about time for a Stencil Guide (who stencilled for whom and when). Any takers?
FWIW, my boss has a WWII rifle that was made by IBM. (according to wikipedia, Rock-Ola was another manufacturer...). I wouldn't be surprised if there were Bundy tanks...

TTT- There is a lot of stencil info in our archives, as we've been answering? "Who made it" questions for years, some correct, some guess work, but trying to consolidate it would be quite a task, no TKS. Re: the wide scope of makers, there have been several V G re-telling of home-front manufacturing of WWII arms, planes, tanks, ships, supplies etc, etc, in the fine WAR history-stories on PBS all this week. Its almost an overload of info, hope it will be repeated for all to see. JUst PM thots. Don

Don,
hrmph. I thought this would be a nice task for a committed researcher.
The problem these days is not a lack of information, but rather the abundance thereof.
