Hey guys and gals,
Figure 23 - bout 116. it says get faster just before 29. then says 29 is faster. say bout 126. Now figure 30 comes in at the same tempo as 29, BUT figure 30 is usually played no faster than 116. According to the score though, it should go about 126 atleast.
So, what is supposed to happen there??

Just from your description it sounds like figure 23 (at 116) should get faster to figure 29 (at 126) and then figure 30 should continue on at 126. What do you mean "BUT figure 30 is usually played no faster than 116?" Although I'm guilty of just following recordings interpretations, I would go with the score if it says same as 29. 2E

Yeah taht's what I want to do - follow Nielsen's own intentions. But if you hear, say 6 different recordings, only 1 plays it at such a fast tempo.
Although figure 30 theoretically should be played about 126, it is almost always played at 116 and i'm just wondering if anyone knows why?

One possibility: the conductor sets the tempo at 29 since the clarinet doesn't play. When the clarinet re-enters at 30 he sets the tempo that he wants, if he doesn't like the conductor's tempo. Happens all the time when rehearsal time is limited and the conductor doesn't really know the piece. You are correct-from 29 to 32 should be the same tempo. Btw, there is a Rall. one before 32 in the orchestral score that is not in the clarinet part.
