My understanding is that the 9* has a poly-cylindrical bore, and the 9 does not. The 9* was Selmer's first attempt to compete with the new Buffet R13 model.
I don't think the R13 will catch on though. Its just a passing fad

Fully explained. The Series 9 * had undercut tone holes. The regular Series 9 tone holes have no undercutting (with one or two exceptions). The Series 9 (eregular) was Selmer's last "big-bore" clarinet (I don't think the CT bores were that big compared with others).

Where can I find one of these "R13s?" I'm always curious about unusual fads, and I'd like to add it to my sarrusaphone collection.

It shouldn't be too hard to find one. While they haven't really caught on, Buffet has been overproducing then for 30 years in an attempt to saturate the market. The fact that they have been able to do this while simultaneously keeping the price comparable to other professional clarinets must rank as one of the greatest marketing ploys since the hot mud baths of Pompeii.
