 Method books for young students
Author: bala

Hello everyone,

I am going to begin teaching private lessons to beginners and students with 1-2 years of experience. I never took private lessons at that age, so I'm not sure what method books are widely used for young clarinet players. Does anyone have any recommendations? The students are from a middle class community, a very advanced band program with supportive parents. Thanks for your help!

Normally whatever books are being used in band seem to work fine. I prefer the "Student Instrumental Course" because it seems to cover more in each volume. The Standards of Excellence gets through what's in the first of the SIC books in 2 volumes...

If the kid's band is using SIC, I go along with that. IF they're in a different series, I go with that but after the second book of that series I typically move them to the second of SIC anyway.

After the second SIC, I go on to Rubank Advanced Vol 1.

As always YMMV...

I have been teaching this age for years and my favorite books are:

1) Rubank elementary for the basics

2) Rubank Supplementary Studies - an excellent book that progresses well and is nicely written.

3) A book by Borodigni. It's an etude book that everyone of my students loves! I don't know the exact name, but that is the composer. It's a new book and I can't recommend it enough.

FWIW, I refuse to use the books the kids have in band. They progress so slowly and the examples are just too short. Hate them.

I use 'Student Instrumental Course', by Weber (Alfred Pub) and
'Clarinet Note Speller', same author and publisher.

2nd book - Rubank supplemental studies (late 1st year, or early 2nd year if they're slow)

Supplement with a duet book 2nd - 3rd year

Then Southern - Melodious and Progressive Studies, book 1 (2nd and 3rd years)

Then Artistic Studies (Southern) (3rd year if quick on the uptake, otherwise 4th year and up)

Baerman, Klose', or Kropesch studies for the more advanced high school kids

The Galper Clarinet Method books 1 and 2 are amazing. Luyben Music carries them. Do not get the ones on sheetmusicplus site as they are the older method that was replaced by the Clarinet Method (old ones are titled "Clarinet for beginners").

disclaimer:

I was/am a business partner of Abe Galper for his Register Key and helped him with his Scales Book. No vested interest in the Method Books at all.

Hello,

In addition to looking for books for your students, I highly recommend the book by Carmine Campione. That would be for you to study. It will give you some great ideas from a great man and clarinetist!
