 the *original* version of copland
Author: Olorin

hi,

at request of my teacher, i've been trying to learn the original, and seriously more difficult version of the copland concerto for the past month or so. i was just wondering if anyone knew of any good recordings featuring the original version.

also, can anyone tell me why the original is still not performed? i understand that it's a relatively new find, but i was a little disappointed when david schiffrin played the old version at this year's clarinet fest. what gives?

thanks,
erin

I believe that Charlie Neidich has recorded it.

I don't really know the answer to your question, other than to say that the published version is the accepted version of the piece.

Neidich has recorded the "original" version of the Copland Concerto on Chandos records #9848.

You might want to read John Moses' posting about Neidich's live performance of the "original version in June of 2005:

Another recording of the "original version" is by Reto Bieri (who had studied with Neidich). "Portrait" on Pan Classics 510 144. It an all American CD with the Copland sonata as well, Bernstein sonata, Gershwin Preludes, Carter Gra, and a little Benny Goodman. Highly recommended!

It has to do with the fact that the notion of an "original" form is somewhat misleading. What, exactly, constitutes an "original" form? Copland probably didn't write down the concerto all at once, beginning to end, so the piece evolved over time. Which one of those evolutionary steps was the original? It's hard to say.

All works of art are produced in stages. Take a look at the sketches used as studies for a painting - they often differ dramatically from the final. They just capture different thoughts along the way to producing the final product. Trying to pick one stage as the "original" version is difficult.

Regarding Copland's clarinet concerto, many clarinetists have played it for Copland in the form most of us know it and he seemed OK with it, so maybe that's the version he preferred :)

Extremely interesting thread linked above by GBK. The last post on that thread though kind of scares me...on a lot of different levels. That last post has a link to copies of pencil sketches done by Copland for the clarinet concerto. On the first page, it gives the instrumentation and starts with:

solo clarinet (alto sax)

I think I'll just stick with what Benny played and forget anything about what Copland might have originally wanted.

Wow....I'm listening to Reto Bieri's performance of the Copland as I write and it is fantastic including the quality of the recording.
