While the Steelers trounced Boston(edit....wrong, It was Buffalo, see the correction below by ABerry....Yoi and double Yoi) at Heinz Field, Ron Samuels (PSO clarinetist) presented a spectacle of his own.
He must be tireless, as he recitalizes often, and takes on technically demanding repertoire.
Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music was the venue.
First Quarter (I promise not to stretch the premise past half-time):
Ralph Vaughan Williams Three Vocalises for Clar and Soprano.
Written in 1958, Ron was ably coupled with stunning (on any level) soprano Lilly Abreu.
The work is a sinuous weaving of the facile voice with the many voices of the clarinet. Not the smarmy " Raif" V. Wms. of the radio waves, and certainly not for any casual performer to attempt. The tones of the performers matched nicely.
Next Jean Francaix Trio for Clar (1990), alto and Piano, with the alto being the viola in this instance (PSO violist Tatjana Mead Chamis.
The viola leads a preludio, with pianistic bass line, and the clarinet alternating lines with the viola.
The allegrissimo follows with a romping, dance-like motif on clarinet, with pizzicatto punctuations from the viola. A scherzando is next, with a skipping song-like flavor. A largo follows, featuring lower register exchanges, and a Presto completes the work with jazz-like riffs.
A Gordon Jacob rendering of Three songs set for Clar and Soprano followed half-time, er... intermission, sorry.
The first is like an English folk song, the second a lament, and the final song suggestive of a highland dance.
Lastly, Ingolf Dahl (1947) Concero a Tre fo Clarinet Violin and Cello. This began with a gavotte-like theme. The middle section (no real break) was a Coplandesque adagio, then a bubbly technical shootout featuring a chalumeau of velvet, without ever having the sound lose focus.
Nice 20th century fare.
Additionally performing were Natasha Snitkocsky, piano, Louis Lev, violin, and Michael Lipman, cello. All were stellar.
OK, so the Steelers won, but Ron Samuels et al should be awarded the game ball.

Hi Allan,
Not to take anything away from the performance of Mr. Samuels and company…
The Steelers actually trounced Buffalo, while Boston –(a.k.a. New England) bested San Diego….But you knew that….
