 Ralph McLane Recordings?
Author: Keith P

Hello all!

I just got in the mail the other day "The Artistry of Ralph McLane" and inside the little booklet that came with the CD it said that he played the Mozart Concerto with the orchestra 5 times; does anyone know if any of these performances were recorded, and if so, how I would come about obtaining them? Thanks!

There was no commercial issue of McLane's Mozart Concerto. If it was broadcast, someone may have an aircheck, but no one has come forward with it. Also, he performed the Copland Concerto shortly before his death, but no aircheck has surfaced.

He made a very fine Brahms Trio on commercially issued 78s, which was reissued (in poor sound) on an LP on the Grenadilla label, but it's been out of print for many years. If you're near New York City, you can go to the Lincoln Center library and listen to a tape of it.

Several people have airchecks of wonderful live performances of the Schubert Octet and the Beethoven Septet at the Library of Congress.

The February/March 1992 issue of The Clarinet (Vol 19 #2) has a McLane discography, most of which the Larry Guy collection has.

The Dvorak Cello Concerto is full of clarinet solos, and one of McLane's best orchestral recordings is of this with Gregor Piatigorsky. It's worth having complete, as there are many more solos than Larry Guy had space for. It's been reissued on CD on http://www.amazon.com/Grego-Piatigorsky-Plays-Great-Concertos/dp/B0000029VD/ref=sr_1_10/102-5295307-4568957?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1189949092&sr=8-10 and also on http://www.amazon.com/Ormandy-Maestro-Brillante-Box-Set/dp/B000057O6M/ref=sr_1_5/102-5295307-4568957?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1189949092&sr=8-5, which has a number of other recordings with McLane.

thanks ken!

I just wasn't sure if there were any other recordings of McLane out that I wasn't aware of.

There is a fantastic recording from the mid 40s of Rhapsody in Blue with Levant and Ormandy. I am sure it must McLane on Clarinet in that one..it is excellent.
