I carried my bass onboard. I was prepared to gate check it, but the flight attendant said "nah, you can fit it in the cabinet." The cabinet where people hang their coats and such, that is. Dunno if a contra would fit as well, but the bass (a Selmer 67) fit in with plenty of room to spare.
