I carried a baritone sax to the gate and did a 'gate check' several times, but that was before 9/11. I don't know if I'd be able to do it now.
Doing this 'gate check' you give them the clarinet at the gate before you board, tell them to put it in the pressusized cabin with the animals. And they will give it back to you upon landing.
