So, it is now time to take the plunge and buy my own A clarinet. I'm going to look at R13, R13 Vintage, Leblanc Symphonie, and Yamaha CSG-H, clarinets. Does anyone play on these clarinets that can tell me what to expect? Also, does anyone else have any suggestions of good A's to look at? Thanks.

If you try all those clarinets, and also try, as you should, many clarinets of each brand and model, you're going to be hopelessly confused. Besides, the clarinet you didn't buy is the one you're going wish you had bought anyway.
What brand and model Bb are you playing now? Chances are that you're going to choose an A clarinet that feels and plays like your Bb current instrument anyway--and you'll find other makes "not as good" because you're not used to them--so why stray away from your "home brand" for your first A?
Do yourself a favor and be a bit myopic. Save yourself some serious headaches by sticking with what you're used to for your first A clarinet.

Well, if you just play one of each next to each other you may find the Yamaha is clearly superior to all the others.
I have a little issue with my low E and F being lower than I would prefer....I'll have to talk to someone about that.
BUT......out of the box from Japan they are as good as a Buffet with the NECESSARY overhaul of say $300 to make them play correctly and they play with only slightly more resistance than the CSG-H "Bb." Amazing horn!!!!

Hello,
Check out the Orsi and Weir. John Weir just came out with an A clarinet. The intonation is perfect and the price is about half of all of the other big brands.

A couple of years ago I played through a bunch of Yamaha A's in the
process of choosing an instrument for my daughter. The CSG that I
settled on is a fine instrument, but the Ridenour I bought for myself
last year is even better.

The Yamaha SEV A fixes the problem with the flat bottom E and F on the Yamaha CS series. The bell design of an SEV A works extremely well on a CS clarinet !!

Why wouldn't Yamaha provide the SEV bell with the CSG if it works better? Of course this is a question for Mike Lutley.

Just try as many as you can in a systematic fashion. 3 at a time, picking the best of each group of 3 and then pitting them against each other worked for me. And bring another set of ears (your teacher or other professional clarinetist), because it is overwhelming to try so many at once. If you can't settle on one the first day, write down the serial numbers of several that you liked and come back a week later to try again. Make sure your reed and mouthpiece are working really well together before you go shopping. Best of luck.

I'm studying with Bil Jackson and Brad Behn right now, and am in the process of selecting my new clarinet with them. Bil, as you probably know, is a Yamaha artist who helped design the new CSG series horns. Brad plays on Buffet, so I should get a good mix from them. I am getting an R13 Vintage and a Selmer from Mark Kastens at Weiner Music to try (I bought my Bb Vintage through him, and these are the instruments he thought I would like), and Bil is bringing up some Yamaha's for me to try next week. If all goes well, I should have a great new A clarinet withing the month.
