Could anyone please advise if a 1924 Full Boehm Buffet that has been overhauled is worth spending $800 (no mouthpiece) on? It's for my teenage son that is at an advanced level. Thanks for any input.

Seems a bit high to me. Sometime back I priced my old F B's , Selmer and Penzel-Mueller at $2-300 and believe you can find one on EBAY [may need repair] at 1-200, like my 3/4 F B Prueffer [no low Eb] I've just now had overhauled by John Butler. Dont know its repair cost yet tho! Luck, Don

That sounds like a high price to me. I think clarinets that age in fine condition are well worth owning (my best clarinet dates from 1937), but they're not terribly in demand and generally don't command premium prices the way vintage saxophones do. Most advanced players today want a new clarinet and believe that the newer models are higher quality. I don't altogether agree with that view, but it keeps the vintage instruments affordable. You can probably do better than $800. The value of the overhaul starts at about $150 if it's just a basic repadding, recorking and regulating. I'd count on the work costing more like $200-250 for an old clarinet that may need extra care because of neglect. I often see basic Boehm instruments for sale in basically decent, repairable condition (no cracks or major damage) *before* an overhaul for around $150-200 in antiques shops. The total cost could still come out to less than $500, IMHO, if you find the right dealer. What's full Boehm worth to the package? Not sure. It's less common. But even with some added value for full Boehm, I still think $800 sounds pretty high. Shop around.

My advice would be to forget full-boehm.. especially if your son really is serious. How many college students and professionals use full-boehm? Not many.
