 Drying Papers
Author: Ski

This may be a stupid question (probably is), but is there any preferred brand of "drying papers" for wicking moisture out of pads? I bought a packet of EZ-Wider double wides which do the job, but if there's something better/more absorbent out there I'd be grateful for a recommendation. In particular, the felt pierced pad of L1 on my bass clarinet gets soaked and takes about 3 papers to dry it after a prolonged period of practice.

I like the Yamaha (powderless) ones. I've never used any other brands though.

BG makes a reusable product for this purpose. No paper waste and no paper noise- good even for performances.

FWIW I use (hand cut, whoa!) strips of kitchen paper towels. The paper is tough enough not to tear, and it quickly absorbs the moisture.

Yep, Bounty kitchen roll is the future!

I also use it to dry sockets out with after playing (and NOT using the same pullthrough as I use for the bore - this has been discussed on here in great detail).

Compressed air does well. There are heavy duty "shop towels" which are paper towels like bounty but a lot tougher. A store such as Pep Boys sells them by the roll.

Cigarette papers. I use Rizla Reds.

Rizla King Size cigarette papers. They are enormous. But you have to put up with shop assistants suspecting you of being a pothead. Fortunately, I buy mine from a flautist, who understands.

For people concerned about carrying around something that could be mistaken for druggie equipment, a good alternative to cigarette papers (and without the glue) is a packet of camera lens pad cleaners. They're about the same size and thickness. Just be sure to get the plain, dry ones that don't come saturated with cleaning products. However, thanks to a previous thread here, I've now switched to cutting up paper towels!

OHHHH
This is so sad!
Why, O why must we fiddle with flooded tone holes.
I just use cigarette papers --w/o the sticky edge. They are easier to toss in my case than paper towel strips.

I do, keep a cork grease-friendly paper towel for the sockets --thanks to Chris P.

I use coffee filters cut into strips--works great. I'll have to try paper towels when I run out of filter strips.

I use Rizla papers for feeler gauges (the silver ones are finer than the blue ones), though I do keep a packet of blue Rizlas in my battlefield toolkit.

Chances are more people will end up using them than me so they can make their roll-ups with when they're out of skins.

But as the kitchen roll thing goes, I just use a sheet and fold it up - an edge or corner will do the trick.

I use "curler end wraps" from a styling salon. No glue & works like a charm.

It was funny when I asked at the styling salon where my wife has her hair done about buying some. The stylist said "Oh, you must be a clarinet player!" Turns out her brother, a clarinetist, gets his supply from her also. She gave me a box that will probably last the rest of my life.

MOO,
Matt

Cigarette papers, the more "expensive" ones made with rice, at .35 cents a packet.
The right size, no residual fibres etc., and there are lots in a packet, which is nice and slim as well.

Every woodwind player I know uses cigarette papers for removing water from tone-holes. Perhaps I am just an innocent, but I never thought it would cause controversy (except once when playing in church and a busy-body spotted them and tried to give me a lecture on the evils of smoking. I was packing up my clarinet at the time and having suffered from a wet pad, was able to demonstrate their use. That shut them up!!)

Years ago, when I was in high school and carried cigarette papers in my clarinet case, I don't remember even the busybodies looking twice at them. If I were in school today, though, I wouldn't carry them. The "zero tolerance" rules backfire if the people enforcing them have zero common sense....

I never use cigarette paper. Did in high school, but not since then - a good hard blow works just fine.

David:
I most certainly agree with you, however a "good hard blow" also attracts as much audience attention as does a cellphone with a ringtone of the Medelssohn Concerto
They have neat papers that come free with certain Australian reeds, no glue, so you can roll nothing and be guilt free. Or you can roll something and it works thata way too.
Upon the end of a session,I used to leave drying papers in all keys that worked with an articulation assuring no moisture would keep the key from opening.
