Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela
Author: GBK
Date:   2007-09-08 01:28

One of the most exciting young orchestras currently performing is the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.

Watch their memorable performance last month at the BBC Proms.

Bernstein would have loved it.

The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is a shining example of how the music education system can truly succeed, even in a country of poor economics...GBK

Isn't someone going to comment that they moved around too much on the stage and it was distracting? [grin]

I have played with this Youth Orchestra this summer, and I must say that they are everything you hear about and more. Anyone who can hear this orchestra live should, immediately. They bring some things to orchestral playing that no other orchestra does. I sat next to a 16 year old clarinetist who could play Shostakovich 10 2nd mvt without breaking a sweat, yet still could make really beautiful music and a gorgeous sound.
They all play Rossi Single Body Clarinets, it seems.

Great video...Venezuela has a super free music education program for young players.

The young conductor,Gustavo Dudamel, in the video has just been appointed music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 26. He's been doing OK but now appears on the threshold of a historic carrer.

Go Gustavo!

The LA players like Dudamel a LOT. He has several very good live recordings out on Itunes with LA also.

I recorded this when it was repeated later on the same night, but I watched the Shostakovitch 10th when it went out live. I've only heard them doing Beethoven before I saw this, and they certainly do Beethoven symphonies a lot of justice.

What players they are, and what energy and passion they have certainly puts a lot of orchestras to shame.

Same can be said about the South African Baroque players (I can't remember what their youth orchestra was called, but they're from Soweto) doing Rameau a few weeks before.

They're called the Buskaid Soweto String Project. You can read more about them at: http://www.buskaid.org.za/index.htm

Buskaid!

Though I had the Soweto String Project part in mind (but wasn't 100% sure so I didn't put in my last reply).

If only West Sussex County Council did something like this twenty-odd years ago - music was and still is something for those that can afford it.

Wow that was really something new, they must have a very motivational conductor. Thanks for the video, I'll keep an eye out for this orchestra.

They're great!

I think it's Gustavo Dudamel who was here and it was so good that the players actually cried after the concert.

I wonder what the upper age limit is? The principal oboe, for example, looks a lot older than a teenager. Perhaps this is the "youth orchestra" equivalent of Taiwanese little league baseball?

The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is basically comprised of 200 young musicans between the ages of 16 and 20. After ageing out they have a choice of over thirty (30) adult symphony orchestras to continue with.

The youth music education program of Venezuela is so good to be almost unbelievable. Sixty minutes did a piece on it not so long ago.

Seems like Venezuela is giving Argentina a good run for the money or has possibly passed them as an arts capital.

I worked with the two clarinetists on the video over the summer at a festival I was teaching at. They were nothing short of extraordinary. VERY impressive players in every respect and a pleasure to work with!

They're coming right here to Symphony Hall in Boston later this year. I will do my best to catch them!
