 Leblanc paperclip model Contrabass clarinet
Author: Alex76

Somebody knows something about this instrument?
It is a good instrument?
It is recommendable, or it is a true headache?
I need to buy a economic Contrabass clarinet with a good sound and pitch.
If the Leblanc paperclip model Contrabass clarinet is not a good election, which Contrabass clarinet can recommend you by a similar price?
Thanks.

You'll be fine with the Leblanc. It's the most compact design of contra there is, and being all metal it is more stable than a wooden or plastic contra.

Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010

The opinions I express are my own.

I've been playing that model for the past year, and it's done a good job. Our school also has a wooden contra that has a nicer sounding tone, but I prefer the response on the metal Leblanc myself.

I play the Eb contra paperclip for two years now and I like playing it a lot. The compact design is indeed also a big advantage vs other models.

Really comes down to how much money you have to spend. 99% of horns exist in the first two categories.

More expensive and pretty good:
Selmer France Bb and Eb wood straight body
Buffet Crampon Eb wood straight body (maybe there is finally a Bb version?)
Leblanc France Bb and Eb metal paperclip
Leblanc France Bb and Eb metal straight body

Cheaper but still very, very decent:
Vito/Leblanc USA Bb and Eb straight body
Selmer USA Eb straight body

For collectors…
Linton/Orsi Bb and Eb metal, shaped like a saxophone - may still be available through Orsi, the actual maker, on special order
Buffet Crampon Bb and Eb metal, also shaped like a saxophone - made decades ago and long ceased production

Forget about it, too much money but probably excellent:
Custom maker Benedikt Eppelsheim from Bavaria Germany
L. A. Ripamonti from Italy, makes Bb and Eb wood straight body

I own both the leblanc model 350 contra alto paperclip and the 340 contra bass paperclip and these are fine instruments and mechanical marvels.

They have a powerful low end, and the clarion is quite useful but is also sensitive to the slightest misadjustment of the speaker vents (which is probably true of all very large clarinets). The extended range of these instruments makes them quite versatile musically.

Their compact shape allows for a very reasonable size of case, so transport is not a problem.

Hi BassetHorn. Do you have any more information about this bass? Aprox. when they were made, etc.? A while ago I asked about it here and no one knew anything and maybe you didn't see that thread and have some more information?

Thanks.

You probably know just as much as I do about this ancient Buffet contra if not more. Few years ago it came across for sale by a collector and a photo was available. I inquired but never received any information.
