 Jame Rae Studies.

As I get music together for a new year of teaching...I come across my copy of 40 modern studies for clarinet by James Rae.

My question...several of the studies in this book also appear in the sax and flute versions...are they identical? Ambiguity for example is on the ABRSM sax grade 5 list, but also appears in the clarinet book. Has James Rae in some way altered it for sax so that you're forced to buy both books?

I got some of those studies too from my teacher and it strikes me that only rarely they go down below B. It's like they were written for sax and little effort was made to transcribe them for clarinet. Which is a pity in my opinion as I like the low notes on clarinet so much. But they're still nice studies!

Anyway, now I play them on my low C contra an octave down, so the lack of low notes is an issue no more for me. :-)

Think obout that logic. It implies that the syllabus came first, and then the pieces we're published to take advantage of it.
