tempo problem in Miluccio

In Miluccio's "Huit Grandes Etudes", number 4 is in double-triplets, 2/8 time, six notes per measure. The tempo marking is quarter note = 168, and below it reads "in 1". So that's about 17 notes a second.

The notes do not fall all that easily under the fingers, and some triplets are marked staccato. After working on this off and on for a couple months, I can play it through - not great, but through - at half the marked speed, 84 bpm. I can't even hear the marked tempo in my head! It's damn fast.

If I were to diligently practice this, very gradually increasing the speed, I don't know that I could ever approach the marked tempo. In fact, I have doubts that anyone could. Can someone lay my doubts to rest - can anyone here play this thing as marked? Inspire me!

I'm having the same problem with Bela Kovak's Homage a Manuel de Falla. I can only get to about 2/3 of the marked tempo. The marking is for dotted 1/4 = 76, and I am playing at 1/8 = 140. And, its mostly slurred.

Anyone getting this thing up to tempo?
