 Montreal Symphony Recordings
Author: Sylvain

Dear all,
The canadian public radio has a page dedicated to the OSM and its new conductor Kent Nagano. The site has online recordings of its past season. The Beethoven symphonies are especially delightful. Here is the link:

Seriously good find!! Full tracks too, not just a minute or so and free.

I am biased because I went to school there, but the wind section is amazing. Tim Hutchins on flute is the quintessential orchestral wind player.

Thanks Sylvain,

Another good site is CBC Radio Two's "Concerts on Demand" :
http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/concerts_archive.html

The Quebec Symphony is another good french canadian orchestra, and they have released some new cds under the ATMA label, which are very high quality.

Sylvain, have you heard of the "Orchestre Metropolitain du Grand Montreal" ? Their recordings are also very good, under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin.

I have heard the Metropolitan too, but I think I am badly biased by their status as the "2nd" orchestra in Montreal and I have not been able to favorably compare them to the OSM.
They are in completely different leagues when it comes to budget, season schedule, invited soloist, etc.. So it's hard for me to make an honest assessment of the musical quality.

The Metropolitain has been getting some very good reviews, and I am quite interested in checking them out some more this season. I didn't do much of that last year, but they are definitely worth checking out for some of their recordings in particular. You obviously can't compare them to the OSM, but I'm glad we have more than one professional level orchestra here in the city. Their conductor just got a unanimous voting-in at the helm of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, as one of my favourites (Gergiev) will be in London. Seguin will be AD of both orchestras (he's only 32 now!) when his Rotterdam contract starts. People seem to only have good things to say about his ideas.

As for the bias about the wind section, Sylvain- I feel exactly the same way!

Bradley

That's very true, about the bias...if you do get over that, then you should listen to their Bruckner 7th :P, but I probably haven't listened to enough recordings of it to give a good comparison.

I saw a documentary of the conductor Seguin on Bravo a while ago, and he has quite a witty personality too. He was coaching the choir in the Brahms Requiem and out of no where said "By the way, you women have beautiful breasts" hehe. He said it was probably the greatest compliment he could give.
