Since I'm already on line figured some of you doublers might know....I have a C melody and want to know if a tenor sax case will work. The original is pretty musty. Thanks

No, if it's a good "C" melody sax, it deserves the proper case. Try eBay or any good music store that can locate one for you. There are plenty of good cases out there for your horn, don't use or modify a Tenor case, it doesn't work as well as the real thing.

I have a modified Pro-Tec tenor case, but it was professionally modified, customized is more like it. My repair tech had it done for me, I forget if by Pro-Tec themselves or another party.
When the locks on my original, musty old Conn case broke, I initially replaced it with a soft gig bag for a tenor, but the loose fit combined with lack of real padding (even though it looked like real padding) eventually caused the solder that holds the bell to the body to loosen up as it banged around, actually allowing the bell to piston. Boy, was that an expensive repair ![[mad]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie9.gif)
My tech didn't know of any real C-melody cases you could buy, hence the customized tenor case. Nothing is going to break in that case.

I have an old Conn C melody, which I love quite irrationally though I know it'll never earn me any money.
I keep it in a soft alto case which says 'Ortola' on it. It doesn't fit with the plug in, but I'm always very careful with it and, to be honest, it rarely leaves the house!

DEG makes a replacement case for C Melody. It's a good quality case and the price is reasonable.

There are plenty of "C" Melody Saxes on eBay right now.
Buy a cheap one with the case you need and you're done looking.

Duh, old horn, old case...
Check out the case with the seller. Look at the photos on line, just be careful it will fit YOUR horn, The "C" Melody's were often different sizes.
I just think you can find an "old" used case, in good condition, for very little money on that unmentionable website, or even at a pawnshop. I've seen a half dozen "C" Melody's in NYC shops over the past few years.

C Melodies going for a reasonably cheap price were most likey made in the early 20's. (Mass production of the C Melody ended around the mid-30's.) With that in mind, original C Melody cases are typically 80+ years old. Heaven knows where they've been....under beds, in attics, basements, etc. Personally speaking, it would make more sense to me to spend around $100 for a brand new DEG C Melody case and put my horn in it. I did that for my C Melody and considered it to be $$ well spent.
