Bass Clarinet mpc. 4 Jazz ??

Hi Folks ,

I just got a Selmer bass , and I'm wondering what works
well in a `Jazz` soloist capacity ?
I'm primariliy a saxophonist , so I'm used to a
med. open _feel_ re: tip sizes on my horns .
Realizing that clarinet embouchure is different , I
would still like a more flexible _feel_ ..
The most open mpc. for Bass I'm aware of is the Vandoren
B46 , which is .81" . The Charles Bay is .80" .
These seem reasonable , but I was thinking more along the
lines of .95-100" . Is this too radical for the Bass
clarinet ??
I want something that is a big,punchy, sound , and I'd
like to be able to use med. strength reeds for a brighter
tone quality vs. stiff reeds = legit. tone quality .
So, Jazz bass players ... if you're out there , what is
working well for you ?

Thanks in advance for your input !!

Irv--I'm a bari sax player (jazz and blues) and have recently acquired a bass clarinet (Selmer model 35). I'm currently using a Vandoren B46 mouthpiece, and although it is an improvement over the stock piece it is, with a tip opening of .081", still too closed, being somewhat stuffy and unresponsive in the clarion and altissimo, though fairly strong and free-blowing in the chalumeau. Like you I'm thinking that a piece in the .090"-.100" range might be the ticket. I have a couple of pieces in this range on order from mouthpiece Charles Bay (phone # 805-497-8161). Charles will make a piece for you with any facing or tip opening you want. Unfortunately, it might take a long time to get it (I've been waiting three months). Another possibility for a real open piece is a mouthpiece maker from Milwaukee named Eanello (http://eanello.virtualave.net). He sells one stock piece with a .100" tip so he may have some available. If the Bays don't come soon I may give him a call. Whatever I end up with I'll post my impressions here on the clarinet bulletin board.

Irv & Robert;

Suggest you contact Walt Grabner for bass MP. He's a sponsor of sneezy.org. His site is Clarinet Express.

He plays bass and makes a good MP.

Cheers,

Paul
