 Finding types and model numbers
Author: P. Ryan

I own two old clarinets, an F. Barbier and a Buffet, Gannon & Co. but cannot locate any serial numbers or model numbers on the instruments. I am considering selling them but don't know much about the clarinet in general, and need to know how to describe them. I would appreciate any advice or information anyone could provide. Thanks, P. Ryan

Does the F. Barbier say "Selmer" on it anywhere? If it does, check the "How Old Is My...?" section here on this site. I think the regular Selmer numbers apply to the Barbier, *if* it's a Selmer. In the 1930s, the Barbier was a Selmer student clarinet. I have one, in metal. For what it is, it seems pretty good -- better than many. However, I think there's an earlier Barbier, from the period before Selmer acquired the name. If there's no indication that it's a Selmer, try Lars Kirmser's Music Trader:

http://www.musictrader.com

He has a long list of serial numbers for various manufacturers. I don't know if Barbier is among them. Good luck in finding out more!

Check the inscription on the Buffet more closely. It probably says Buffet Crampon. If it does, you can check the serial number right here on Sneezy by clicking on the Equipment item in the menu on the bottom of the page.

If it's a Buffet Crampon, the serial number should be at the bottom of both the two longer sections on the back side of the horn.
