About 2 months ago, the TSO announced an opening for Principal Clarinet; a one year position. It was pposted in the industry and discussed here on the BB.

Yesterday, August 21, the auditions were held and a winner selected.

26 people auditioned
8 people made the 2sd round
2 finalists

The 2 finalists were in a league of their own, an enormous degree of talent above the othere 24 auditioners.

The 2 finalists were so close it was almost a toss up.

The winner was a student at USC, Thorton school of music, a student of
Yehuda Gilad and a sub in the LA symphony.

Runner up is from New Mexico, teaches at a University and plays in teh New Mexico Opera Co.

It was mentioned that more people would have auditioned if the position was permanent.

regards

dennis

Hello Dennis,

Nice of you to use such kind words to describe myself and the winner of the audition. The winner's name was Michael Byerly. Congratulations to him, and I hope I spelled his last name correctly.

Just a few clarifications:
I am not a member of any New Mexico Opera company. I was fortunate enough to sub with the Santa Fe Opera this summer yes.
I will hopefully have a teaching job at a university some day, but I'm not now.
Also, I live in Milwaukee, and I'm from Maryland originally.

Regards,

Mark Dubac

sorry mark. I received my info from Andy, who had the highest regard for your playing and was very impressed.

No worries Dennis. My guess is that my summer address right by my name and instrument is what led to the confusion. I just didn't want to receive any important mail in the wrong state. The local post office is still forwarding me things from June...

It was a pleasure to talk to Andy after the audition as well as the rest of the comittee. Tell him thank you for me if you can.

I don't know mark personally, but he is obviously going to land a job really soon. He has been so close in so many of the last few auditions. Congrats to him and Michael................
