One of my band directors recently suggested buying an M13L mouthpiece for my clarinet, as I was in need of a new mouthpiece and I find the 5RVL a little too open-faced for my liking. Earlier today I was on the Vandoren website looking for a little information as to what size reed they recommend for this specific mouthpiece, and I found the following:
Recommended Reeds:
Traditional: 3, 5/4
V 12: 4/4,5
56 rue lepic: 3,5+ /4 /4,5 /5
Can anyone explain the little division sizes(5/4 and such)?
Also, I normally use the Traditional reeds. For this type of mouthpiece, would I benefit from switching over to one of the other types, or will there be no difference?

Replace the commas with dots and all will be clear.
Traditional: 3.5 / 4
V 12: 4 / 4.5
56 rue lepic: 3. 5+ / 4 / 4. 5 / 5
These are only Vandoren's recommendations. YMMV

Yep, only recommendations. You have to decide what works for you. Personally I find size 4 V12 reeds work very well with the M13L. I have some friends using size 3 1/2 traditional although i find this too soft.

I liked the 5 V12 with this mouthpiece. But, I don't know how my M13L compares to others of the same model. I didn't like the Rue Lepics of any size with this mouthpiece, nor the traditionals.

I use 4 V12's on this mouthpiece...a friend of mine uses 4,5 Rue Lepic's.

I tried two M13 Lyres a few days ago. I had to use my normal reeds (V12 3.5) which I played on my Greg Smith. On one they didn't work at all - far too soft. On the other I got a couple of my reeds to work and was realy surprised at how smooth and easy blowing it was. Goes to show how much they can vary.
One question though - on the Vandoren site, the M13 Lyre isn't listed anymore...at least when I looked. Is it discontinued?

As we go from open to closed mouthpieces the 5RV is next in line from the 5RV Lyre. When I went from a 5RV Lyre to an M13, I found that had a nice, dark traditional sound, but I lost some color. For me the 5RV was a good compromise. I would suggest borrowing a 5RV to try on your way to an M13.

I have generally liked the facing of the M13 lyre more than the regular M13. I have found Traditional Vandoren 4's to work quite well on it.
I just checked the VD website, and Vandoren does not list the M13 or M13 lyre on the little chart, although it still comes up when you click for facing details. I wonder if they are streamlining and eliminating those?

Aussie Nick, how did you find that the M13 lyre compared to the Greg Smith? I'm currently playing on a Greg Smith 1+ and have been reccomended to try m13 lyre by my teacher.

stick with the greg smith. it has a more pleasant, and fuller sound as compared to the m13.

Aussiegirl, my Greg Smith is a 1++ and I like it alot. I was with a friend who was trying a bunch of Fobes and Vandoren mouthpieces and of the two M13 Lyres I tried one of them needed a much harder reed than the 3.5's I was using, and the other played pretty well with my 3.5's. I liked that I didn't need to use as much pressure or "bite" as much to start a note with a clean stacatto. It somehow allows me to tongue quicker and cleaner and not run out of air as quickly. I think C2thew is probably right - at least for now I prefer the sound I make on my Greg Smith, but I think the M13 Lyres allows me to have more projection. I will possibly end up going back to the Greg Smith, but at the moment I'm going to try this M13 Lyre for a while.
