Quite often I find I sound flat (compared to the ensemble) when we play in Bb (as written). Do you think:
(a) I've got a poorly-tuned note somewhere (i.e. I'm not even-tempered any more)? Which one do I suspect? - they all look pretty much OK on the tuner
(b) Someone else who sits near to me has an instrument which is out of temper.
Is there a 'best' note to tune to in a given key?

At least with many clarinets, the first space "F" tends low (maybe even the "E" and "D"). Also keep in mind that as your volume goes up the tuning goes down. That is, when you're playing into your tuner you are probably just playing relaxed, at a moderate volume, however, in the context of ensemble playing you may be pushing the volume more and the tuning will need to be adjusted accordingly.

That's interesting - I'd never actually considered playing into my tuner at ff. It makes sense that some notes are more liable to play flat than others in that situation.
I have actually pushed in a smidgen before playing a gut-busting solo - is this a sensible thing to do, do you think?
