 Instrument shops in Amsterdam, Brussels
Author: Mike Blinn

Dear Fellow Clarinetists,

I am in the market for a bass clarinet (professional quality), and will be in Amsterdam and Brussels next month. Can anyone recommend reputable instrument shops in either of these two cities?

Hello Mike,

If you have the opportunity, go to the south of the Netherlands (Thorn), to Adams.
They sell professional instruments worldwide!!!

Buedsma,

Thank you for your help. I checked the link you gave me and it appeared that music-company had rather high prices. Do you know any instrument shops in Bruxelles that sells used instruments? Or in Liege?

You could try Casper van Spek, he's a great clarinet repairer and does sell bas clarinets. The best thing? He lives in amsterdam!

musiccompany also sells used intruments .
Don't know where you got the prices. Normally a new bssclarinet selmer will cost you +/- 6800 euro , tva included. Pay attention to the tva ( sales tax ). It is often not mentioned on european websites , and added after sales to the amount .
Sales tax is 19% in the netherlands and 21% in belgium. I never noticed a lot of difference between the prices of the different shops .
Maybe you should email me privately to discuss prices . I asked around in belgium and the netherlands and some shops advertise instruments that they don't even have in stock !

A personal talk can also lower the price .

Best Regards

For clarinets , i would certainly consider music-company . They specialize in clarinet - the owner also has a music degree , did work a few years in the states for Leblanc etc etc

St-Pieters-Leeuw is not far from brussels ( 4 miles )

"Sales tax is 19% in the netherlands and 21% in belgium."

That makes me feel better about the 17.5% VAT slapped on items in the UK.

Non-EEC buyers don't have to pay VAT.

> sales tax

7.6% here. :) And it must already be included in advertised prices unless the target audience are not end-users/consumers.

Adams has a very good stock of instruments (I visit them almost weekly and know for sure that this isn't any problem), but I would always recommend you to contact them to be sure that they have enough instruments on stock to try. (I assume that you have a thight schedule when you visit the netherlands)

Normaly it is possible to get 15/20% of the advertised prices... so be sure to ask for your price. ;) (and it's correct, the VAT is here 19%)

Not exactly. If a non-EEC buyer comes to the store they have to pay the VAT. Then they should be able to receive it back in the airport when they leave the country. If they order and have it shipped to their own country they don't pay the VAT at all.

Thank you all for your advice.

Buedsma, I printed the information about Music Company. I will try very hard to get there, if only to see the antique clarinets!

Opus II, does Casper van Spek have a shop where I might try some used bass clarinets? I will bring my mouthpiece to Amsterdam with me.

You could also try to contact Bert Wijnand, http://www.bertwijnand.nl/.
He lives in Den Haag and is also a really good repairer wo also sells second hand instruments.

Also worth mentioning if you want to see old instruments: the musical instrument museum in Brussels: http://www.mim.fgov.be/
Don't forget this is the country of Adolf Sax, the father of the modern bass clarinet!
