 Alto clarinet ligature
Author: clarnibass

Hi

Since we don't have any store selling an alto clarinet ligature here, I've been using a shoe lace until now. I thought maybe a tenor sax ligature would work the same as a soprano clarinet ligature works on alto sax? Does anyone know? I can easily get a tenor sax ligature (but not easy enough that I can just go and try it, so I'm asking here). I'll probably get something like the Vandoren Masters which we probably have in some store here and is not too expensive.

Thanks.

Clarnibass,

I'm using a Van Doren Optimum on mine and like it a lot. Certainly the freest blowing with that and yet very secure as well. It improved the performance of every (Grabner, Leblanc, Van Doren, and Hite) that I owned.

I theink the lig I use is for ALTO sax, but it's so long since I bought it I can't be 100% sure.

Only two? I'm stuck with three right now - and all are in working order!

I use a Bonade regular, am not sure if its for Alto sax/clar, a tenor lig may be too large, possibly a fabric/rubber for a Bb cl may be large enough, if "reversed" to be like a Bonade in its "grip". Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Rovner has a "Sizing Guide" on their web site to tell you which of their ligatures they recommend for various combinations of clarinet (or sax) size, mouthpiece maker, and mouthpiece material. It won't help much if you don't want to order a Rovner ligature, though.

A tenor definately works alto would be too small. I used a tenor Ultimate lig on basset horn a couple of weeks ago.

Would it be worthwhile to order one online? Or would the shipping charge be prohibitive?

Weiner music offers free shipping on all orders over $60. If you do not plan on spending $60, perhaps you can combine your accessory order with a friend to reach the $60 limit...GBK

I think he meant that question for me, since I'm not in USA, so won't have free shipping regardless of the order total. I don't know Weiner's shipping cost here, but anyway it doesn't matter since I might get the ligature from someone in USA who is visiting.

I would think the Rovner (which I use with a Hite mouthpiece) would most closely approximate the shoelace you are now using.
